The Art of Writing Camp

Green River College, Auburn Main

Join Tiffany Doerr Guerzon in these immersive art and writing camps. In the art camp, campers will learn art concepts by making a variety of projects such as a handmade art journal with pockets made from recycled materials, frameable mixed media art, handmade stamps, an altered notebook, fabric dyeing with natural materials and more. In writing camp, students will learn how to write engaging narratives using rich sensory details with a variety of writing exercises such as black out poetry, writing prompts, round-robin stories and more. They will record their writings in their notebook and on tags and cards to put into the pockets of their handmade art journal, using their writing to inspire the art and vice versa. Tiffany Doerr Guerzon is an award-winning freelance writer, writing instructor and owner of Cut, Paste and Paint mixed media art company. Ages 8-11.

Kids in College Camp

Campers will get to experience "college life" by exploring Green River's campus, interacting with faculty & staff, going through the enrollment process & talking with an advisor to plan their educational future!!  Classes will be held throughout the week to highlight some of the best programs Green River College has to offers in a fun and engaging way. All activities will be designed and lead by Green River faculty. Ages 12-14.

Law & Order Camp

Ages:

Join Highline and Green River Faculty to explore the Criminal Justice System this summer in a fun and hands on learning environment. Work with Lynne Dean, Forensic Scientist/Retired latent fingerprint examiner, to process a crime scene and explore the basics of crime scene investigation both at the scene and in the lab. As you work your case, get ready to take it to court as you travel to Highline’s campus to work with Bruce Lamb, J.D, MPA with over twenty years of litigation experience in jury cases, and Che Dawson J.D,  to hold a mock trial. Campers will have opportunities to participate in the trial, and learn what goes into bringing a case to court. Ages will be posted by week. 

Sound Science Camp at the MaST

Highline MaST Center with Drop off at GRC Kent Campus

Ages:

Sound Science Summer Camp offers campers the opportunity to participate in a variety of hands-on educational experiences at the MaST Center Aquarium. Activities include beach exploration, animal identification, skeleton articulation, specimen dissection, and more! These activities provide a skill base that can be used in most marine science careers. Campers have the unique experience of learning about the Puget Sound while being immersed in the marine environment! Ages will be posted by week.

Robotics I Camp

Ages:

Come and explore the fundamentals of robotics using LEGOs®  and your imagination. We will build and program LEGO® Spike Prime® robots to complete different tasks. Find ways for your robot to interact with its environment, investigate gears and levers, and compete in exciting challenges. This camp requires no prior programming or mechanical skills or abilities. Ages will be posted by week.

Understanding Urban Ecology Camp

Have you ever wondered if the water in your local stream or pond is healthy? Have you ever wondered where all the deer and racoons go when they aren’t in your yard or local park? Join the Discovery Academy’s Urban Ecology Exploration Camp. Our inquiry based camp will be held at Green River’s forested Main Campus and focused on our local natural world. We will explore the forests, rivers, and streams of our community with a highly trained urban ecologist as you engage in fun, hands-on STEAM activities. You will ID plants and animals and understand what makes an ecosystem healthy and safe. Ages 12-14.

Split your time with career photographer Roger Young, learning the foundation of digital photography, take photographs of the beautiful natural setting around campus. Then take these photos to the next level, when you learn the world of photo editing, covering the key tools and creative adjustments to enhance your photos. Then find your voice and leave your mark on the world!  It’s time to start a career as the next YouTube® star. Explore the variety of content and personalities that exist on YouTube and how to find your own niche. Learn the Dos and Don’ts of the platform and how to practice good digital citizenship. Develop your on-camera presence, your own channel branding, and professional editing skills. Take home a plan for launching your own channel with the content created in class! Student projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Required Equipment: Campers must bring DSLR or mirrorless camera with lens, and memory card to camp. Ages 8-11
