Introduction to Trauma Informed Care & Practices in Early Childhood Programs

Audience: Birth to 5 Early Childhood Educators, Directors, Administrators and Parents.
Instructor Bio: Jenna Peterson
Jenna has provided workforce professional development training to thousands of early childhood practitioners locally, regionally, and nationally in the application of the Early Childhood principles and practices including but not limited to Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health, Trauma Informed Care, Development and Diverse Learning Needs (Special Education.) In association with Green River Community College, she teaches in the Bachelors of Infant Mental Health Program and the Early Childhood Education Associate and Certificate Programs. She brings a wealth of current industry knowledge as she spent over 15 years providing direct service before stepping into higher education full time as a special educator in early intervention, a developmental specialist, mental health consultant in medical, home and school settings and more. Her workshops are steeped in practical application and enthusiasm and she is proud to have dedicated her career to fostering positive early relational health and development in young children through partnering with and empowering those who care for children. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education with an emphasis in Infant Mental Health. She has post graduate training in Infant Mental Health, Reflective Practice and Trauma Informed Care.

Chaos to Calm – Using Brain Science to Support Social and Emotional Development During Transitions and Beyond

Transitions in the classroom are often the most dysregulating for children and can escalate challenging behaviors. Join us as we dive into how to support transitions based on brain science. This framework provides strategies to support children in moving calmly from one activity to another. Educators will walk away understanding why transitions may be chaotic and how to support self-regulation, attention, and following directions during transitions.

Communicating with Families - Tips for Talking with Families About Developmental or Behavioral Concerns.

Do you find it difficult to bring up possible developmental delays with parents? You are not alone. Communicating developmental or behavioral concerns is a sensitive but critical skill. Join us as we dive into the importance of intervening early based on the latest brain research and tips on communicating with families regarding developmental delays. We also cover an overview of early intervention and special education services in Washington state, so you know how and where to refer.

Summer School for Teachers: STEM
Aug. 12-13 | 9:00am - 4:00pm | Highline MaST Center Aquarium

The MaST Center Aquarium is hosting Summer School for Teachers! This 2-day training will introduce 6th-12th grade teachers to marine-themed STEM curriculum kits that have hands-on classroom investigations. These curriculum kits will be available for teachers to check-out during the school year. The curriculum is aligned to Next Generation Science Standards and NOAA’s Ocean Literacy Principles.
The 2-day training is August 12th-13th from 9am-4pm, with an hour lunch. During the training, teachers will participate in the kit lessons and hands-on activities such as plankton tows, building marine skeletons, and constructing remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). Plus, get the chance to interact with Puget Sound marine life in the MaST Center’s aquarium.
This free training will be held at the MaST Center Aquarium (28203 Redondo Beach Dr. S., Des Moines, WA 98198). Clock hours are available. Space is limited to 16 participants! Registration is required.

Instructor Bio:
This workshop will be led by Marwa Almusawi, the Director of the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Green River College. Marwa earned her Master’s of Education from the University of Washington, Tacoma. Her research interests encompass the politicization of representations of Muslim women. Marwa, who hails from Arab American roots, spent her formative years in Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Syria, and Auburn, WA. She is a proud graduate of the Auburn School District and previously served as President of the Multicultural Student Services Directors Council (MSSDC).

Teacher Clock Hours
To maintain their certification, educators are required by law to complete continuing education credits throughout their career. These credits are offered through “clock hours,” which are units of credit assigned to educators at a professional development or training event. Clock hour rules are available in Chapter 181-85 WAC(link is external). (1)
Green River and Highline College are both approved providers of clock hours. Clock hours MUST be requested PRIOR to the beginning of class. Per OSPI, we are not allowed to issue clock hours after the class begins.
